Broward
Arts Camp

Our Theater program is directed by the Murray brothers. Kevin graduated last spring with his BA in Theater from FSU and Brennan is already working closely with the FSU theater program and, as a sophomore, featured prominently in some of their mainstage shows. Brennan, know for his innate ability to fall on stage, is a former standout at Florida state thespian high school festivals where he secured myriad critic’s choice awards. Kevin is presently in London working post graduation. Each have been campers and counselors since we began BAC in 1999. They feature classes in improvisation, mime, and acting and direct the afternoon one-act classes.

Text Box: Our Rock Band at Cypress Bay High School is under the direction of Mr. Brandon Cruz, a professional drummer and teacher at Flanagan High School. Last year his campers performed over 30 ensemble pieces, with songs by Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin (and a few camper originals). Campers practice their chops during the AM program with members of the incomparable Jacob Jeffries Band, featuring Jacob Groten, Jimmy Powers, Brian Lang, and Eric Jackowitz, and rehearse for the show in the afternoon. Beginners are welcome and can choose band as part of morning program! Intermediate and advanced players may take rock band all day - and often do.

Campers can find a wide variety of arts activities during the day. Our director, Meghan Hood, is a junior at UCF and does tie-dye, illustration, animation, drawing, clay, and various summer camp crafts. She has been with us since 2000 and also assists the musical theater and theater departments with her students to design sets and costumes.

A camper-favorite program, our film program is directed by Robbie Weukner, a freshman at the University of Central Florida. This will be Robbie’s third summer directing the program. With his guidance, campers write, film, star in, direct, and edit a series of short films over the course of the summer.

DANCE / MUSICAL THEATER

Text Box: Rachel Girard, Andrew Slane, and Mollie Casserly (all former campers) head up our dance/musical theater production. Rachel is wrapping up her theater degree at FSU and Mollie and Andrew are current theater majors at UCF. The work they produce with campers in the limited time of each session is a wonder. Andrew and Mollie’s modern dance and tap classes in the mornings are camper favorites. For the final show, campers also participate in either cuttings from full-length musicals or an array of pieces from various musicals.

At Broward Arts Camp, campers choose their own morning program daily from an offering of 8-10 classes. These classes change daily and range from outdoor games to crafts to dance lessons to drama games. In the afternoon, campers pick session-long “majors” from the programs below and work on longer group projects for our end of session shows.
